Purple radish exposed to light after 72 hours germination.

Production Year: 2023

Item ID: 10502

Our project is an experiment in growing microgreens. The crop is a species of radish (identify...).

Growth medium is loose coco coir, saturated and drained. Size of container is 4.5 inches at base, slightly more at top.

After seeding on Thursday, we placed lidded container in darkness. We exposed the planting to light on Sunday. Elapsed time in darkness 72 hours approx. Ambient temperature at exposure 65ºF approx. Relative humidity at exposure 71%. Photo taken upon exposure to light; total elapsed time 72 hours approx.

Other simultaneous crops in similar regimen will be compared. The expectation is that our radish seedlings will reach a heigh suitable for harvest and consumption after seven days in light (sunlight in window with western exposure, full direct nsun approx. four hours daily due to shadow from building and adjacent forest. Our null hypothesis is that there will be no difference in results. Observed differences between local result and those of other growers will be the basis of further experimentation.

We were going to call this experiment "Seven Days in May," but we got started early, and also we didn't want to be sued by the late Fletcher Knoebel's publisher. (Yes, that is rather esoteric; look it up.)
